Three Tree Hill is a small luxury lodge situated in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, northern Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.
All the staff employed here come from the rural local village, Hambrook, which is 8km down the road. Through our Community & Conservation Levy (together with generous guest donations) we are able to fund small (and large) community and conservation projects in the area.
One of these projects is a small business development incubator, where we have earmarked potential entrepreneurs to start small craft and service businesses in the village. We are always open to new ideas for the staff or village residents who have a skill or talent and wish to make a business out of it. Our first project was initiated by Ntobeko Ntshingila, who started to make beaded doilies to sell in our guest curio shop. They were so beautiful that she sold enough to buy her mother a refrigerator for Christmas!
Maduna, formally a student housekeeper at the lodge, has started her own business making copper wire underplates for sale in the lodge shop. She has made such a success that she has trained other women in the village & now employs 15 ladies to help her. Other projects are handcrafted beaded dolls, traditional stylish clothing, and laundry. Purely by staying at the lodge, you are indirectly helping these women with their businesses. We are in the process of setting up a website and online shop for their crafts to assist with sales.
