Cottar’s 1920s Camp dove into 2018 (very nearly literally) with the welcomed rains received this past month.
The Masai Mara in January is usually rather dry with some short rains here and there, but this year, Cottars was surprised with some lovely, refreshing downpours. And with the rains came the wildlife, along with the clear crisp views over the Masai Mara and some adventurous river crossings (don’t worry, there’s a sturdy bridge for vehicles!).
Although it’s only just the beginning of the new year, the highlight so far has been spotting a family of wild dogs near camp.
Having not been seen in the area in quite a while, it was assumed that the drought last year had caused the wild dogs to move on to ‘greener pastures’. Fortunately, the recent rains have enticed them back home and the team at Cottars hopes to be seeing the dogs regularly over 2018.
There have also been plenty of cats about, with regular sightings of lions, leopards, and the famous coalition of five cheetahs. Next door to Cottars; The Black Rock pride has had cubs which are wonderful to watch playing and running about, annoying their parents. There is also a resident female cheetah who is frequently spotted with her adolescent cub.
The green plains are teeming with game and you don’t have to go far before you’re surrounded. This is what safari is all about: thrilling adventure, luxurious surroundings and an abundance of wildlife. What a great start to 2018!
