As the owners of Makakatana Bay Lodge will tell you: Family is the most important thing in the world.
If you are visiting the lodge you will notice the camaraderie and playfulness amongst the Makakatana staff who live and function not only as a team but as a family. On check-in, guests are always warmly welcomed and greeted with Makakatana’s famous home-made lemonade (and the recipe is often handed out happily). The peace and tranquillity of the lodge are as infectious as the smiles, charming wit, and laughter of the team who welcome everyone into their home.
The IsiZulu people are known to call the boss of an establishment ‘uBaba wasekhaya’ which means ‘the father of the home”. Hugh and Leigh Ann Morrison are the loving father and mother of Makakatana Bay Lodge and they are known to open their doors and hearts to all who wish to visit their sacred family lodge.
Hugh Morrison keeps his rich family heritage alive by entertaining our guests with stories about his family and growing up at Makakatana. Their three boys have grown up at Makakatana and have the same passion for their home and family as their parents do.
Makakatana’s family bonds extend to the guides as guests will tell you of the brotherly companionship between guides Jaco and Hans who are always discussing interesting things regarding the fauna and flora of the wetlands. Be it an in-depth discussion about why certain animals cannot be found in the same habitats or bickering over the correct identification of a frog call, guests are never bored around these two.
For those who are looking for a home away from home where you can relax and enjoy not only the ambiance of the bush and the peacefulness of the St Lucia Lake but also the luxury of a 4-star lodge with an authentic South African heritage, Makakatana is the place for you. #MakakatanaFamily.
On another note…
Makakatana Bay Lodge is entering its 21st Anniversary in April this year and looking back at the years, it is quite astounding how many things have changed. Makakatana has survived floods, drought, political uncertainties and more, and being resilient South Africans, they have always bounced back from tough times. With the current Coronavirus scare, the team has been watching how it is affecting global travel. People are skeptical of travelling through fear created through the media. Fear of being quarantined in a foreign country far from home is understandably a concern. A great solution for those travelling to South Africa is that there are great lodges to keep people quarantined! Just imagine being quarantined at Makakatana Bay Lodge… watching wildlife from your room and enjoying gourmet meals! It sounds like paradise if you ask us! #KeepCalmTravelToAfrica
