There are very few places remaining where flamingos can still reproduce successfully, and one of them is the Etosha Pan.
Situated in this beautifully scarce area of Namibia, Onguma’s The Fort is designed to offer magnificent views over Etosha Pan and Fisher’s Pan. After recently receiving some splendid summer rains, the Fort’s waterhole was visited by a flock of Greater Flamingos for the second year in a row.
Last year, the waterhole hosted a small flock of five flamingos, but this year the flock has increased to over 40! This annual pilgrimage happens when the flamingos leave the coastal areas of Walvis Bay and make their way to Etosha for the breeding season.
Their breeding success depends largely on how much water is available in the pans and, even after good rains, it’s a race against time for the flamingos to breed before the waters dry up again. Fortunately, flamingos can withstand many years between breeding events, and then, when conditions are just right, they are able to procreate explosively. Seeing these ballerina-like migratory birds in their natural environment is always such a special experience.
New Lunch Menu and Game Vehicles
In addition to the arrival of the summer migratory birds, there have been a couple other exciting developments at Onguma recently. Firstly, a new lunch menu has been launched that offers a larger variety of light meals. The breakfast menu has also undergone a revamp and is proving very popular with guests.
There are also two new game viewing vehicles scheduled to arrive at Onguma soon. These have been custom built to ensure maximum comfort while enjoying game drive activities. A couple new driving routes and sundowner spots have also been scouted out, making for some truly spectacular sundowner nature drives.
