The rains are here at Mkulumadzi and Majete Wildlife Reserve has been transformed into a beautiful lush emerald green wonderland!
Despite the thick and dense vegetation, the Big 5 have been making frequent appearances. The cats, in particular, have been quite busy and we have also had some interesting cat activity around the lodge. We recently had two young male lions who managed to cross the Shire River in front of the lodge. This is not common at all and soon after African Parks brought them back to the other side of the river, on our concession but in no time they surprisingly made their way back across the fluctuating river!
One evening, we heard the lions roar on the way to the main area in the evening – that certainly got our adrenaline going as we never hear lions so close to the lodge. As if that wasn’t enough of a show from the lions, the next morning guests who were in chalets 4 and 5 (and stayed behind from usual morning game drive) had a first time Mkulumadzi experience: While laying in bed, sipping on their coffee they got to watch the 2 lions lazing around on the beach across the river! Apart from these two lions, there have been frequent sightings of the other lions.
Besides our beloved hippos and the lions, we are excited to hear more animals calling in the area. While on star bed for sundowners, guests were thrilled when they heard a leopard nearby. More recently we have been hearing hyena, after spotting hyena tracks near chalet 1.
Not wanting to be left out of the limelight, the rhinos have also been putting on a show, with regular sightings, even on the roads in clear view, much to the delight of our guests.
The new year also brought the arrival of another bushbaby “baby”. Although the little one is getting used to mama’s routine of visiting the main lodge area, she will soon be comfortable to make her own appearances which is always entertaining for our guests.
The giraffe are also doing a good job of keeping our guests happy with frequent sightings since their arrival last year in Majete Wildlife Reserve.
