Snorkeling at Thumbi Island with Pumulani

Although Malawi is heading into winter, the weather has been fabulous and guests at Pumulani have been treated to spectacular sunsets as well as cool clear waters which are fantastic for snorkeling.

It’s always a treat to go on a snorkeling trip to Thumbi Island, which is a 30-minute boat ride from Pumulani. Out on the water, there is so much to see along the way, including the popular fish eagle feeding, which Black, one of the guides at Pumulani takes great pleasure in doing. So much so that he apparently even knows specific fish eagles and has given them names. On this particular trip, guests were acquainted with ‘Obama’ the fish eagle, who put on quite the show, soaring down from a baobab and swooping in on a fish that Black had hurled into the air.

Once at Thumbi Island, everyone was in the water without wasting much time, enjoying the cool clear freshwater and the colourful cichlids on display.

It’s not only water activities on offer at Pumulani. There are also lovely bush walks, and for the more daring and physically fit, there is the 45-minute climb to the top of the hill behind the lodge. It is no easy feat, however, the view from the top makes the climb well worth it!
