Summer Safari at Garonga

Summer Safari at Garonga

In comparison to other countries with extreme weather patterns, South Africa experiences two seasons per year; summer, and much warmer summer.

The transition between seasons is mostly seamless. In the bush, however, the change is much more noticeable. In addition to the days becoming longer and hotter, the landscape transforms from earthy browns to lush emeralds. It is a magical time of year to be in the wild.

As we leave ‘winter’ behind, the temperatures in the Makalali Reserve are starting to soar and Garonga Safari Camp is gearing up for the hottest time of the year – commonly known in the safari world as the ‘Green or Emerald Season’. This doesn’t mean that guests visiting during this time have to sweat their way through their safari though. Quite the opposite, in fact. Here’s why:

Semi-Tented Camp:
Overlooking the dry riverbed below, the six luxury units each have overarching canvas tents and are light, airy and spacious. Leaving the tent open at night allows nature’s aircon to work its magic, allowing a cool, peaceful night sleep.

Outdoor Showers and Baths:
Each of the tents have their own outdoor showers, providing a luxurious place to clean off while still enjoying the allure of mother nature…and her breeze! For a truly unique outdoor experience, book the outdoor bath. It’s wonderfully appointed in a private location overlooking the riverbed and is the ideal place to relax and cool off after a day in the African sun.

Sleep Out Deck:
One of the most popular attractions at Garonga is the Sleep Out Deck. Overlooking a waterhole, the “Sleep Out” is a viewing deck with a four-poster bed where guests can enjoy a private dinner and spend the night alone in the bush. The best time to take advantage of this deck is during the summer months when the sun starts to set later, as this is prime time for watching animals come down to the waterhole.

Pool with a View:
For those looking to cool down in a more traditional way, the infinity pool overlooking the riverbed is the place to be. There’s a good chance you’ll even spot some wildlife while in there!

A little more about Garonga Safari Camp:
Situated in the 22 000-hectare Makalali Conservancy, just west of the world-renowned Kruger National Park, Garonga Safari Camp is a classic and intimate safari camp. Each of the six tented rooms are tucked into trees and boast their own wooden deck, complete with a hammock that commands breath-taking views over the dry riverbed. It is not unusual for guests to even be visited by wildlife while in their tents!
