Lions with a taste for Hippo at Changa

Lions with a taste for Hippo at Changa

Hippopotamus isn’t usually on the menu for most predators. After all, hippos are one of Africa’s most formidable animals. However, guests at Changa Safari Camp have had quite a few rather interesting lion sightings involving hippos.

Hippos are huge, notoriously aggressive and have incredibly large teeth. Basically, they’re not the easiest meal for a predator and are generally left alone. Of course, it does help if the hard work is already done for you. Recently, the Eastern pride of Matusadona lions opportunistically found a decreased hippo.

Changa camp manager, Sarah Cronje, was out with guests when they happened upon this interesting sighting. Before long, the lions were joined by some obnoxious crocodiles who decided to join in on the drama.

This wasn’t the only exciting recent occurrence with this pride of lions, which have been collared and are tracked by The Matusadona Lion Project. They went on to put on a spectacular show for some more Changa guests when the young males tried to take down a full-grown hippo. This is the second time they have tried their luck and they’ve yet to succeed but perhaps the lads are trying to fill their fathers’ elephant killing paws.
