Dry Season at Changa Safari Camp

Dry Season at Changa Safari Camp

At this particularly dry time of year in the Matusadona National Park of Zimbabwe, an abundance of wildlife gathers on the floodplains of Lake Kariba, just a short drive away from Changa Safari Camp.

On this occasion, Bruce Cronje, head guide at Changa, came across a spectacular sight. As he emerged from the mass of thick jesse and mopane woodland into the lake and shoreline grasslands, Bruce spotted eleven lions right on the shoreline in front of him, scavenging on a hippo. For some time, Changa’s resident lions, known as the Eastern Pride, had been making their presence felt and heard, but today the four adult females, five subadults and two cubs were very evident, feasting contentedly on the hapless hippo. Bruce is not sure how it had died, but his guests were treated to a rare sight indeed. Lions on the shoreline were a rarity until the 1990s, when they became a more frequent but still amazing sighting.

Capturing these special moments on camera makes the pleasure last even longer and Changa is thrilled to have Neil Fairlie on board to assist our guests with their photographic pursuits. A native Zimbabwean, Neil is a professional wildlife documentary filmmaker and photographer – his intimate knowledge of the bush, natural instincts and skill in capturing unique moments of animal behaviour on film make him a brilliant photographic safari guide for beginners or pros.
